Taylor A. Mayfield
If you think you’ve heard the name Taylor Mayfield before in the crane industry, you’d be right—for the past seven decades! A third generation crane operator in a line of Taylor Mayfields, Taylor A. Mayfield began his career in the hoisting industry just two weeks after graduating from high school.
Taylor A. was preceded in this trade by his dad Taylor W. Mayfield who founded Mayfield’s Hoisting in 1996. His grandfather, Taylor H. Mayfield, was also an oiler and operating engineer and worked on the many dam projects in Eastern Washington before moving the family out West to work on high rises, a nuclear submarine base, and the Alaska Pipeline.
“I got a huge running start because of my dad (and his dad),” smiles Taylor A. “He taught me the when, why and how of this industry very early on. We were even able to work together having the time of our lives on equipment that most people don’t experience in their entire lifetime.”
Taylor A. took his first job at 18 working with his dad on the Seahawks Training Facility in Renton.
“I started as an apprentice then became an oiler and an operating engineer,” he reflects. “I was lucky enough to work with my dad on the Windfarm in Vantage and also on Boeing’s 777X project—one for the books.”
His other memorable jobs in the field included projects like the Waste Water Treatment Plant in Bothell, the Seattle Seawall, Swedish Issaquah Campus, and Bangor Nuclear Submarine Base.
Taylor A. started his biggest role yet in 2015 becoming Mayfield’s Hoisting General Manager. With guidance from his dad, Taylor W. Mayfield’s Hoisting has grown its team to include four field reps, two office staff, a safety director and 70 full-time employees in the field. Now Taylor A. hires the operators instead of running cranes himself.
“I’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of unique opportunities,” he says with gratitude. “I’m excited to continue to build the business—the sky is limit. We’re headed to Hawaii next!”
